Breast Plastic Surgery Procedures

The appearance of a woman’s breasts will change throughout her life as a result of pregnancy, breast feeding, weight fluctuation and the aging process. Dr. Adrian Sjarif, a fully qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon, offers a range of breast plastic surgery procedures to address these breast changes. Breast surgery will be tailored specifically to address individual patient concerns, and may involve placement or removal of implants, lifting or reducing the size of the breasts, transfer of fat to the breasts or a combination of several techniques.

What Can Breast Surgery Accomplish?

Depending on the procedure, breast surgery can do the following:

  • Increase the size and fullness of the breasts
  • Correct asymmetry of the breasts or areolae
  • Reduce oversized, heavy breasts
  • Elevate breasts that have descended off the chest
  • Restore a youthful shape to the breasts
  • Remove previously placed breast implants

Women that are concerned with scarring after breast surgery will be pleased to learn that Dr. Sjarif employs short scar techniques whenever possible. Shorter incisions result in smaller and less noticeable scars.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size and fullness of the breasts. This is generally achieved with the placement of silicone implants. Patients who look to pursue breast augmentation surgery may do so because they are bothered by the size and shape of small breasts. Other patients may look to breast implants to replace breast tissue lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding or the effects of aging. Alternatively, some women may require breast augmentation surgery to balance unevenly sized breasts or to reconstruct a breast that has been lost after breast cancer.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce large breasts by removing excess tissue and skin. Women with oversized, heavy breasts tend to experience physical and psychological side effects, including back, neck or shoulder pain, problems with poor posture, breathing problems, rashes or irritation under the breasts, difficulty fitting into certain clothing and unwanted attention leading to issues with self confidence. Breast reduction surgery may help address these problems by offloading this excess weight and helping to create a more proportional and balanced breast size.

Male breast reduction surgery is intended for men that struggle with gynaecomastia, a medical condition in which a hormonal imbalance causes the development of excess breast tissue. During the procedure, excess fat, glandular tissue and skin is removed to create a flatter and firmer chest.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breast lift surgery (Mastopexy) is designed to elevate breasts that have dropped from their previous position, reshaping them and repositioning them so that they sit higher on the chest wall and off the abdomen. Excess skin is removed, the nipple areola complex elevated, and the surrounding tissue is tightened to help improve the shape of the breasts. Ptosis (breast sagging) is commonly caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding and the natural effects of aging and gravity. Breast lift surgery can be combined with breast augmentation using implants or fat, or breast reduction, as needed.

Breast Implant Removal

Breast implants are not designed to last forever and there may come a time when they need to be removed and/ or replaced. Implants that have been in for many years can become hard causing conditions such as capsular contracture which can lead to changes in the shape of the breast and when significant, can lead to breast discomfort. Breast implants can also rupture and may require removal and replacement. Breast implants may behave differently over time, resulting in asymmetric breasts requiring removal and replacement of one or both implants. In a small proportion of women, breast implants can cause non-specific symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, rashes and brain fog. This condition is know as Breast Implant Illness and may be diagnosed when no other cause for these symptoms can be found.

Nipple/Areola Correction

The size and shape of the nipples and areolae (the darkly pigmented skin surrounding the nipples) can affect the overall appearance of the breasts. Oversized, asymmetrical, irregularly shaped or otherwise abnormal nipples and areolae can all be corrected with surgery. Corrective surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with another cosmetic breast procedure.
