Body Contouring Plastic Surgery Procedures

For many patients, a healthy lifestyle of adhering to a strict diet and regular exercise are sometimes not enough to achieve the desired changes when it comes to their bodies. Factors such as pregnancy, weight fluctuations, genetics and the natural effects of aging can result in areas of the body where excess fat and/or loose, saggy skin can lead to physical or psychological impairment.

Dr. Adrian Sjarif, an experienced, qualified Specialist Plastic surgeon, offers a variety of body contouring plastic surgery procedures in Wollongong and Bowral to help with addressing some of these concerns. Dr. Sjarif is sought-out by patients for his artistic approach, meticulous attention to detail, as well as his empathy and warmth.

What Can Body Contouring Surgery Improve?

Depending on the procedure, body contouring can:

  • Help to reduce areas of fat that may be resistant to diet and exercise
  • Remove loose, excess skin that may result from weight loss or pregnancy
  • Help to tighten areas of loose skin
  • Remove stubborn stretch marks caused by weight fluctuations and pregnancy
  • Treat skin conditions and rashes that result from overhanging excess skin

Many body contouring patients find that when they are happy with their appearance, they are more motivated to maintain their improved physique with healthy lifestyle habits. In addition to the potential aesthetic benefits, removing loose skin also makes it easier to move around and stay active with exercise and sports.

Post-Weight Loss Body Contouring

Patients that have lost a substantial amount of weight in a relatively short amount of time might find that they have excess skin and loose tissues obscuring their body shape. This is particularly true for those patients who have successfully lost large amounts of weight following bariatric surgery procedures such as gastric sleeve and gastric bypass procedures. Post-weight loss body contouring surgery is intended to remove loose skin and tighten the remaining tissues to help define the underlying body shape.

There are a number of different post-weight loss body contouring options. The option that is best for each patient depends on factors such as his or her specific areas of concern, anatomy and personal aesthetic goals.

The most comprehensive post-weight loss body contouring procedure is a body lift, which focuses on tightening and toning the abdomen, buttocks, hips and thighs. Other body contouring procedures include brachioplasty, which targets loose skin and excess fat on the upper arms, and thigh lifting, which removes skin and fat from the upper, inner thighs.

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed to address excess skin and fatty tissue located in the upper and lower abdominal region and flanks. In addition to removing excess fat and skin, muscle separation can be addressed by suturing lax abdominal muscles if present. Liposuction can be performed in conjunction with the abdominoplasty procedure to help with overall contour. Patients seeking an abdominoplasty are most commonly individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight, or women who have had multiple pregnancies and/ or larger babies as this commonly leads to muscle separation.

Liposuction

Liposuction is the most definitive option for fat removal that doesn’t require the introduction of large scars required in tissue excision. Liposuction can be performed on virtually any area of the body (and some areas of the face and neck). This is a reliable and efficacious option to remove fat that won’t respond to diet or exercise efforts. It must be noted however that liposuction is not designed to replace old-fashioned weight loss, but is instead a useful option for contouring areas resistant to diet and exercise.

Combination Procedures

Oftentimes, several body contouring procedures may be performed together in the one surgery. This comprehensive treatment that is most commonly performed for women who have children (i.e. mothers) helps to address the changes in her body brought about by pregnancy and nursing. This combination procedure commonly combines breast surgery (usually breast lift, breast augmentation or breast reduction) with an abdominoplasty and/or liposuction. The procedures can be combined into a single surgical operation or staged out into separate phases, based on the patient’s preferences and Dr. Sjarif’s recommendations.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to address labia that are large, protruding, asymmetrical or otherwise irregularly shaped. This can be problematic for women, causing discomfort with wearing certain types of clothing. It can also lead to increased infections. Some women notice a change in the shape or size of their labia after giving birth, whereas other women have always been bothered by their genital appearance. The goal of the surgery is for the labia minora to look more symmetrical and in proportion to the labia majora.
