Abdominoplasty

Abdominal Contouring to address Loose Skin & Excess Fat

The abdomen is a problem area for many. The abdomen, probably more than any other area of the body is subject to weight fluctuations. Whether it is because of fluctuations in weight due to lifestyle, diet or the effects of pregnancy and child-bearing, it is an area that can be addressed with surgery if appropriate. Dr. Adrian Sjarif is a Specialist Plastic Surgeon with particular expertise in this area. He sees patients considering this surgery for consultation, performs the surgery and conducts all post-operative reviews through accredited facilities in both the Wollongong and Bowral areas.

With the abdominoplasty procedure, he can improve the contour of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat, and tightening the abdominal muscles. This will result in a reduced waistline and bring the abdomen back into proportion with the torso. Some of the benefits of the surgery may include having clothing that fits more proportionately, rashes and chafing may be improved, increased ability to move and exercise and resulting benefits for general health and well-being. Most abdominoplasty patients have a positive experience and are extremely satisfied with their decision to undergo surgery. As with any surgery however, there are potential risks and complications that can occur, and Dr. Sjarif will go through these with you at length prior to making any decisions for surgery. And most importantly, if he feels that you may not be a good candidate for these procedures, then this will also be discussed with you.

Who is a good candidate for an Abdominoplasty Procedure?

You could benefit from an abdominoplasty if you are bothered by loose, stretched-out abdominal skin, excess fat and separated abdominal muscles. This occurs most commonly in women who have had children (especially more than one child), or patients that have lost a significant amount of weight, usually after some form of bariatric surgery (sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass). Abdominal skin that has stretched out due to a growing baby or weight gain, will not always contract over the smaller stomach following delivery or weight loss. Abdominoplasty is often combined with breast surgery to help restore a woman’s pre-baby body.

Keep in mind that abdominoplasty is not a quick fix to achieve weight loss or a substitute for diet and exercise. You will see the best results if you are at, or close to, your target weight, exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet but simply cannot get rid of a stubborn lower abdominal pooch or saggy skin.

Surgical Details

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed under general anaesthesia. Dr. Sjarif begins the procedure by creating a horizontal incision just above the pubic hairline. This incision will be low enough that the resulting scarring can be concealed beneath normal underwear and swimwear.

Through the incision, Dr. Sjarif will use liposuction techniques to remove excess pockets of fat throughout the upper abdomen and flanks. He will repair damaged or separated abdominal muscles, suturing them together in a corset-like fashion. He will also trim loose skin (which sometimes eliminates stretch marks) and pull the remaining skin down for a smoother and flatter contour.

If needed, Dr. Sjarif will create an additional incision around the navel and relocate it higher on the abdomen.

After abdominoplasty, a binder-like garment will be placed around your abdomen to support the healing tissues and reduce swelling. Your abdomen will be bruised, swollen and tender, but the worst of the side effects should resolve within a few days. Plan to avoid bending, lifting or straining for a few weeks.

Dr. Sjarif can advise how long to take off from work and when to resume normal activities and exercise. Most patients take about two to three weeks off from work and resume light exercise about four to six weeks after surgery.
